Morning Raga by the Kentish Plover

La ...re..do...
A Kentish Plover contemplates singing on a bright morning.

Winter is here and so are the waders. Along the shores of Kerala, wherever there are estuaries, little plovers spread out over the sand bars, running on tireless little feet. Morning walks are suddenly more fun on the beaches, especially to spend time with these lovely birds. On the first day of 2014, I found this adorable Kentish Plover (Charadrius alexandrinus) in half minds whether to sing or not. Warm sunshine, sandy beaches and blue skies – who wouldn’t want to?

I see these Kentish Plovers in small groups with Lesser Sand Plovers who are of similar size and color. One good way to tell apart a Kentish plover is by the white collar that runs all the way around the neck.
