Little Egret

A Little Egret’s moment of reflection

Every Eureka! moment is preceded by a moment of reflection. This Little Egret (Egretta garzetta) spotted in early December at Kabini has two strands of feathers flowing near its belly. It was hardly noticeable until two weeks later at Madras Crocodile Bank I saw flocks of Little Egrets in orchestrated cacophony. With the prominent plumes at the nape and decked in breeding plumage, they got me reflecting upon the encounter two weeks earlier. Looking back at this picture I could see the breeding bells had started ringing in the second week of December as the picture proclaims, yet it was the reflection that evinced the two tiny strands that turned into gowns and tuxedos few weeks later.
